The Sandhill Cranes

I have always wanted to see the sand hill crane migration through Nebraska.  I'm not necessarily a bird person, I have just seen lots of photos of it and wanted to witness it for myself.  Well, just so happens that my husband is from Nebraska and his grandpa lives in Kearney which is right in the heart of where the cranes come through.  So, a couple of weeks ago while visiting family over spring break, we just happened to be there during prime crane time.
A little history, over 500,000 sand hill cranes migrate through a narrow stretch of land near the Platte River in central Nebraska each year.  On their way to Canada and Alaska for the warm season, they feed on the corn fields and roost on the flats of the river.  I was afraid that we would have trouble finding some because we were out there in the middle of the day.  Boy, was I wrong.  There were thousands of cranes and finding them was no trouble, I was not disappointed.  The only thing I wish is that I had a longer telephoto lens, because even though we were close to the cranes, I couldn't get close up shots.  But, I wanted to share some images from my trip.

Talk about bird legs.

Awesome how the cranes line up down the corn rows.

I love the look on this cow's face.

My son and his cousin watching the cranes out the car window.  It was "slightly" windy that day:)
